   Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion is a strategic priority for the USTA Wyoming District and one of our core values.  Diversity allows us to touch "All of Wyoming." Inclusion allows All of Wyoming" to touch us.

Our responsibility as the Governing Body for the sport in Wyoming obligates us to identify and lead in removing barriers to allow us to be inclusive so that tennis reflects all of Wyoming.  So what have we been up to?

  • In 2013, for the first time ever in WY, tennis was part of the Wyoming Special Olympics Summer Games to assist them in introducing tennis to their athletes.
  • We have established 10 and Under tennis programs at a number of Boys and Girls Clubs.
  • We helped WY Indian Elementary School get a USTA grant for a KidsTennis Club.  today all the students at the school get tennis as part of their PE program and ~50 students stay after school for the Kids Tennis Club.

  • F.E. Warren Air Force Base has tennis at their Boys and Girls Club and we hosted an Adult Military PlayDay for active military and their families.

  • We helped the Cheyenne Parks and Recreation Department get a $20,000 grant to build 4 permanent 36' courts at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
  • We purchased a Match Point Tennis Wheelchair for our WY wheelchair players.  Want to get out on the court but don’t have a high performance wheelchair – that is what our chair is for – it is a “loaner chair” for anyone who has a need for a high performance sport chair.

The USTA Wyoming District is currently seeking volunteers in all segments of our operations; and especially those who represent diverse backgrounds.  These positions       include officiating, event planning and administration, fundraising, committee work and even positions on our Board.  We are also hoping to identify underserved groups and to network with diverse organizations.

Got any ideas or want to volunteer?  If so, please contact Mario Ibarra, WYOTA Chair for Diversity and Inclusion, and see how we can reach additional populations in your community.
