55 Plus League a Success

WY Adult 55+ League Event

This past weekend, six teams squared off for an opportunity to advance to the Intermountain Sectional Championships in the 55+ Leagues.  The Women’s 55+ 7.0 and 8.0 Divisions were played in Casper at Washington Park and the Men’s 55+ 8.0 Division was played at the Cheyenne Country Club.

It was great getting to know some new players that have joined the Wyoming leagues for the first time.  Two players from Douglas (Jacque Goodrich and Patricia Chance) live in California during the winter and in Douglas in the summer and Polly Grimshaw joined in on the fun.  She divides her time between Sheridan and Casper and Val Wimbish spends the winter in Texas but you can find her on the tennis courts in Casper and living up on Casper Mountain in the summers.  It was a pleasant surprise to see some faces we have not seen on the courts in a while too -- Brenda Allen from Lander and Lorna Brooks from Sheridan also participated.  Welcome back ladies!  We had players from Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper, Douglas, Sheridan, Lander and two from South Dakota.  Welcome to all and thanks for participating!

Suzanne’s Ladies (Suzanne Gulley – Captain) took the Women’s 7.0 Divisions over the Laramie “Spin Doctors” Captained by Susan Sherman.  Susan is a new Team Captain and hats off to her for stepping up to captain a team.  The winning team, Suzanne’s Ladies,  included Carolynn Biven, Collen Larsen, Deb Theriault, Jennifer Walker, Lynne Navarro, Melanie Dowler, Polly Grimshaw, Susan Cross and Suzanne Gulley.

Jacque’s Douglas Ladies (Jacque Goodrich – Captain) took the Women’s 8.0 Division over the strong Laramie – Casper Team (Senior Racquettes) Captain by Megan Hayes from Laramie.  This division was split going into the final match on Sunday afternoon with Jacques Ladies winning the first match on Saturday and the Senior Racquettes , taking the morning match on Sunday.  There was some GREAT tennis played under very hot conditions on Sunday afternoon for the third and final match with Jacques Ladies coming out on top.

Greg Rich’s Men 55+ 8.0 Team from Cheyenne (Scuffed and Cranky) did not fare well against the team from south of the boarder, Balinski’s Boy’s which was Captained by Terry Balinkski.  There were some very close 3 set matches but in the end, Balinski’s Boys took the division and will be advancing to the Sectional Championships in Denver later this year.  This division was played at the Cheyenne Country Club – thanks to Ken Yamada for making that happen.

It is not too early to get registered for the upcoming Adult 18+ and 40+ league events which will be held in Laramie in August.  We already have teams registered for both events so get a team number today and join in on the fun.   Give me a call or send me an email to get a team number for either of these events.
